Chinese Spring Festival, 2012 Chinese Spring Festival Feast
But it is not our family tradition to be that casual in eating. A family get together is necessary on important occasions, as the older generation is getting more and more vulnerable. So we went back to hometown - a small city called "Zhu Ji" - for the Spring Festival family reunion every year. The gran
d feast on the Eve of the Spring Festival is usually held in my grandparents' home. My grandparents would be very happy to see us arrive for the feast in time. They always feel reluctant to invite us, assuming that we're too busy, but they would have expected us to visit them ever since early January.
The grand feast involves a whole day's cooking and several days' purchase of all kinds of food ranging from eggs to ducks and hams. On the Eve, from the afternoon to 8 o'clock, the kitchen always witnesses the busiest scene in the whole year: everyone who's able to cook a thing or two works in the kitchen or helps outside. The dishes for the evening feast vary every year, and there's no fixed pattern, but what's put at the center of the big round table is always the same: a dish local people called "Xi Shi Bean Curd", which is my favorite.
