2011 Spring Gradute Courses at Columbia University and New York University

Dear Professor,

For the forthcoming 2011 Spring semester, I am going to work with Professor Paul Zimansky as a TA on Tuesday and Thursday. His undergraduate courses are arranged from 6: 50 to 8: 10 pm, which are totally in conflict with my schedule, I mean, if I am going to take graduate courses in our department of history. That’s to say, if I am going to attend his classes as a TA, I could not take any graduate course on Tuesday and Thursday, as you may know, most of them are arranged in the afternoon and evening.

I have asked him to adjust my TA assignments, but it does not work. Luckily, he is very nice and asks me to take my graduate courses as usual. He tells me that even if I am late for my TA job, I am still fine. Considering this issue, I am going to take Farmer’s course on Thursday and two other courses at NYU and Columbia, just in case I can take part in professor Zimansky’s classes, although I have to be late for half an hour on Thursday.

So far as I know, Samuel Moyn is going to open a graduate course on Michel Foucault on Wednesday at Columbia and I’d like to take it. Also, Alice Kessler-Harris at Columbia is going to open a course on “HISTORY OF AMER WOMEN & GENDER,” which, I think, will be helpful for me to understand Mercy Otis Warren’s mind. While at NYU, Kupperman, Walkowitz, Lauren Benton and other historians have arranged their courses on Tuesday and Thursday. At present, there are three graduate course that I can take, there are “Problems in the History of Early Modern China,” “Theorizing Race and Slavery” and “The United States and the World, 1790-1914.”

To be honest, I know Samuel Moyn. When I was still an ICJS fellow at Monticello, U.Va Professor Allan Megill mentioned him to be and told me that he was a very, very smart guy. Since I moved to Forest Hills and made new friends with Columbia graduates, most of them highly recommend him to me, although I encountered him several times and did not take his course. I do not know whether you will allow me to take Samuel Moyn’s course, but I have to tell you that I am a real Michel Foucault fan.

I write to you, just want to consult you which courses should I take. If you can give me some advice, that will be welcome!

Best,
T
