Black Swan
Synopsis:
Rivalry in the company of the New York City Ballet. Nina is desperate to get the main role of Swan Lake that leads the ambiguous Thomas. But she soon finds herself facing the beautiful and sensual new recruit, Lily ...
The director was relaxed, pretty cool and you could ask him some questions. Vaguely interesting but the party debate unfolded in MK2.
Darren Aronofsky ... Darren Aronofsky! This film leaves no one indifferent. For some it is a genius and the other a director overestimated. Everything starts with the first feature film of Mr., Pi, a kind of mathematical thriller where the main character seeks God in the numbers and eventually become paranoid. It is rather interesting but bore few flaws. However, it presaged a director to follow.
Aronofsky's next film, as you all know, is Requiem for a Dream. A film that I consider is a small masterpiece. Requiem for a Dream followed the "fate" of four people consumed by drugs and obsessed with this idea to succeed. And then comes The Fountain, a project dear to the director but that prove to be double-edged sword on this design that will leave many people on the "road" and for the next New Age. I shared an opinion on this film. Finally, we arrive at The Wrestler.
It is on this last job that lets me see the film before Black Swan. So I was not reassured about the ability of Aronofsky who keeps us in suspense on a history of rivalry between ballerinas. And yet ... Yet he comes to give me a great surprise.
So we follow the story of Nina (Natalie Portman), a ballet dancer, who tries to be the best dancer possible and finally get a leading role especially for the famous ballet by Tchaikovsky Le Lac des Cygnes. And this is the beginning of problems for Nina. Everyone wants her place and she is facing a tyrannical professor, seductive, perfectionist played by the excellent Vincent Cassel. She gradually falls in paranoia, fear of not being perfect in a world where perfection is a prerequisite ...
Darren Aronofsky takes us then into this maelstrom of madness that gradually surrounds the heroine who must be the best but had to struggle to reach perfection because of a morbid rigidity. She turns, spins in a completely mesmerizing choreography leaves the viewer caught up in this story that there will stunned until the end.
The many sets of mirrors are there to emphasize the search for perfection or imperfection corrected. These mirrors are also there to show the terrible aspects of the personality of the dancers and the weakness of this world of beauty. For one day or another, the imperfections will be too large to be hiding. Unfortunately, even if it is staged, there is a side a bit rude in the many mirrors that dot Black Swan. We see quite quickly where it comes from. But anyway, Darren Aronofsky is not a very fine filmmaker in general.
Visually, the film borrows heavily from the previous The Wrestler. It is believed that most of the lights do not hide anything from reality. Black Swan is quite gray. The main decorations are austere places such as subway trains, the toilets of a nightclub or the corridors leading to the dance halls. Places where Nina spends most of his time to contrast with its beauty, the beauty when she starts to dance on stage radiant.
Overall, the film is quite dull. That serenity is not breathing. The example of the House of Nina is obvious. A pink room but a pink and finally cleared somewhat reassuring. Nothing is done in the film to feel at ease even visually. This is not a world of happiness.
BUT as Nina, Black Swan struggling to reach perfection. Darren Aronofsky presents Nina in a pink room with stuffed animals by adding an intrusive mother who fantasizes somewhat a career she could have on his daughter. BAM. The sign "you know the way" pointing the tip of her nose. We know very well the first few minutes how developments will unfold psychological Nina. A little more nuance, a little less Stabylo to highlight all of this would have been welcome. And unlike The Wrestler, it is much better in Black Swan, especially this little movie.
Natalie Portman, she is so beautiful and charming!
Music also plays an important part in the film. I will not repeat the classical music that leads the whole story. Clint Mansell, the composer, is as changeable as the feelings that run through different characters.

In conclusion, Black Swan is a successful film where Darren Aronofsky improves what he had done on The Wrestler. It is a visceral film that takes us on to the end. A purpose, unlike the rest of the film is perfect. The actors are good, )even if Natalie Portman is excellent, we have this impression that she plays for the Oscar ...) and to my surprise even Vincent Cassel, he is also excellent, too.
