Religion and the Enlightenment of Mercy Otis Warren
I am exploring and thinking about the ideological origins of Mercy Warren's enlightenment in early America and I am quite confused by her correspondance letters with revolutionary politicians and Whiggish radicalists in the Great Britain. I wonder to know: how religion, especially 17th and 18th puritian thinking and her Christian mind influenced her thinking on the ratification of the Federal Constituion and her writing of the History, could you give me some advice (books will also be welcome) on how to understand the puritan minds or the Christian religion in the 18th New England?
Mercy Warren talked a lot on human nature, human mind in her letters and correspondance, it seems that Warren, a faithful Christian, whose historical work, drama and letters were also influenced by her religious faith. I wonder to know: what role puritan religion, namely Christianity, played in shaping her historical and political thinking at that time?
I was born in China, a Godless country, although there are still a lot of Christians and other religious people are living there. When I was young, teachers tell me that I should believe in reason and science rather than religion. Although I am not a faithful Christian, but I am open and can tolerate Christians and their behaviors. It is a fact that we can not deny that religion really influenced the 18th early Americans and I am curious to know how 18th century New England Christians were influenced by the Christianity.
If anybody can give me some advice, that will be very welcome!
