我们已身处后结构、后现代、抑或后启蒙的时代。在这么一个消解主体、去中心化、解构元叙事的年代，我们都应该谈谈德里达所说的 différance，而不是difference和identity。毕竟，在他们看来，它们都成为cliché了。但历史学与这些所谓的后现代主义的重要区别在于，它关涉具体、实在的人和故事。
从英帝国史(empire history)到新英帝国史（new imperial history）
如果要从20世纪所出版的学术著作中选一本影响比较深远的书的话，很多人可能会选福 柯、德里达、斯皮瓦克等其他人的著作，但萨伊德的Orientalism无疑也是其中最重要的一本。Edward Said认为，西方利用知识霸权对东方进行了想象和建构。萨伊德的这种两分图示在建构东方和西方图示的时候过于简单，在现在过于过时了。但对于眼下当红的历史学家而言，一点也不过时。
很长一段时间以来，历史的研究主题无非以民族、国家及个体为对象。以Perry Anderson, Barrinton Moore, Theda Skocpol, Michael Mann, Norbert Elias等为代表的历史社会学家往往重视大结构、大进程、绝对主义专制国家兴起过程中的税收、军事、财政等。在他们看来，国家的权力组织及相关方面的建构是历史社会学研究所不可或缺的重要主题。受这类历史社会学家影响的学者有John Brewer等人。

但是，在英国史及大西洋史研究领域，尤其是以英帝国为研究中心的历史学家们，他们认为这种对帝国（empire）或国家（nation）的理解过于局限。因此，他们认为要重新定义empire和nation。他们认为，要对empire 和nation进行重新界定，首先要明白英帝国统治下的人对empire和nation的理解，换句话说，就是他们的consciousness和 identity。只有在英帝国的臣民真正意识到他们的这种identity，历史学家才能真正领悟到empire和nation的真正含义。这样，他们认为英帝国历史研究要从传统的empire history 或national history走向imperial history（在这两种史学取向转变的过程中， john Pocock曾在20世纪70、80年代提出过new British History，这种历史取向主张将英国、爱尔兰、苏格兰、新西兰、澳大利亚等涵盖在new british history的光环下，各个小地区这是这种“新英国史”的archipelago，而pocock所要做的就是把它们组合成Atlantic archipelago。类似于他在Machiavellian Moment所叙述的Atlantic Republican Tradition。Pocock的这种主张现在很少有人提及了）。

到底何为imperial history呢？imperial history研究走向了英国海外，而不再局限于英国国内。也就是说，以前的帝国史采纳的是centripetal取向，而现在的imperial history则是centrifugal取向；它主张通过流动的人来叙述他们的imperial history，而不是具体生活在英国国内的人。Kathleen Wilson笔下的黑寡妇T Philips，库克船长，Catharine Hall笔下的Edward John Eyer等都是这种代表。这样，它将地区史、national history和imperial
history区分开来；与empire history关注taxation， economy，absolutism等国家的权力网络不同，imperial history 走向了cultural performance， cultural practice, performance of
difference及identity。它们用一种去中心化的叙事来叙述、去主体化的方式来建构主体、去主体identity方式来建构identity。

对于identity的认识，他们一致同意通过otherness的角度来叙述britishness或者British
identity.但，正如萨伊德一样，他们对identity的界定和理解有时有些简单化。Identity的呈现仅仅局限在设定一个它者的想象和建构。identity不是一个人所认同什么，而是，从叙述者的角度看，他们经历了什么，体验了什么，在他们身上identity意识是如何想象的和建构的。按理说，这些流动的人（他们都取材与17、18世纪英帝国时代的人，他们的共同特点是他们一直在流动，从英帝国国内到澳大利亚，到菲律宾群岛，到太平洋，到加勒比群岛等，一直在动，而不是静态的。）有些时候，他们试图通过海外流动的个体identity来说明Britishness。但很多时候，他们过于简单化了这种identity，仅仅将identity理解为与它者相区分的identity。一旦Britishness与它者的identity 相区分后，Britishness就呈现了。
Linda Colley（Colley是Kathleen Wilson在yale的advisor，Kathleen的Island Race就是在挑战Colley的Britons，Britons与1992年出版，Island Race在2003年出版）的Britons和Captives(在一起吃晚餐的时候，linda和yale历史系的John Demos谈论起了John
Demos的著作——-The Unredeemed Captive， Demos 向Linda 叙述了北美白人在印第安人部落做俘虏的故事。Linda基于Demos的故事，展开了她对British captives in the world
history, Captives就是这本著作的结晶，这本书出版于2002年)， Catharine Hall（此女相当有才华，她是英国文化研究学派Stuart Hall的老婆。大概是20世纪80年代的时候，Stuart
Hall去加勒比海地区做调查，Catharine跟他老公一起过去，基于她的研究，最后写出了大作Civilising Subjects）的 Edwrad John Eyer， Kathleeen Wilson Island Race中的Captain
Cook及黑寡妇等都是这种identity研究的典型代表。

在一个后启蒙的时代，德里达的崇拜者们都去谈论différance的年代，再去谈论identity，多少有些不合时宜。一个典型的例子，就拿 Helen Siu（萧凤霞，此人现在yale）为例子。2008年的这个时候，萧凤霞在清华讲课，我有幸听了几次。因为她是做华南历史人类学的，她在香港长大，后来在英国求学，再后来又在yale获得教职，并在华南做田野调查。那时，她上课就专门兜售一些流动性的、不确定性的知识。处于好奇，我就问了问她的观察点和认同感在哪，她说，认同对她来说已经不重要了，英国她已经真正成为了一个世界主义者。萧的例子足以说明，identity的历史性、流动性及不确定性，而这些问题，imperial
historians似乎过于简化了identity的蕴含。
萨伊德将福柯的知识-权力关系引入到Orientalism，Colley最早将Said的Orientalism引入到她的Britons一书的研究中，但Colley对Said的理解从一开始就是片面的。Colley鼓舞了Wilson和Catharine Hall等人将imperial history发扬壮大，Colley或许不曾想到这些。
